Character Anatomy

Character Anatomy

My characters anatomy is drawn in a chibi style (cute) anatomy. They are also drawn as animals to reflect their nature, personality, as well as race.

Hang Rimau (Tiger)

I used represent Tiger as Hang Rimau because Tigers are fearless and loyal. It is also a symbolic animal in Malaysia.

Jahat (Fox)

I made Jahat as a fox because of its mischievous nature as well as cunning mind.

The Sultan(Orang Utan)

The Sultan is basically a monkey to represent man. It is also found only in Malaysia.

Portraying characters

This task requires me to create a poster portraying my characters and making them stand out. I started off with a simple sketch

Visit to Gempak stars and Ajinomoto factory

On 1st of April we had a trip to Gempak stars and Ajinomoto production factory. We went there by bus at around 9 AM. Our first destination was the Gempak stars headquarters ,the journey was quite long it took almost an hour to get there. We reached the headquarters at around 10 AM, the road was quite small and there was no way the bus can park so we had to drop off a small distances from the headquarters. After a while we were greeted with an employee of gempak stars and lead us to the headquarters.

GEMPAK STARS
3 Employees at the entrance

The headquaters itself doesn't look very big, at the entrance the space was quite small but it had 5 floors which took some effort to climb. We were greeted by 2 other members and were lead to the 3rd floor which is the gallery and it is used for their presentation. The gallery is not big but it is enough for all of us it is also quite cool so it wasn't stuffy for us either. They talked alot about how the company came to be and also the process of each work.

If I remember correctly the artist made sketches of their comic or story line which requires details of how it goes, made numbers on dialogue balloons to show the sequence and viewed by others for feedback. After that phase, they are drawn in light blue on a sketching paper and are sent to the other department/studio for inking. The process of inking is traced accurately and carefully. After inking, it is then scanned into digital form and colored using software's. Once, the coloring is done it is then sent to the printing factory by mail to be mass produced.

After the presentations the employees gave us a tour to the studios on the 4th and 5th floor which is where the magazines and graphic novels are drawn and made. We visited the 5th floor where the gempak magazines are made. To my amazement, the room was pretty big compare to the floors bellow. The room is able to hold many employees and all of them are seemed very focused and are undisturbed by us visiting them. The employees are making various information about games, movies, figurines and such using software's that some I do not recognize. They are also responsible on the story boarding.

We went to down 4th floor after the visit which is the artist and inking studio. Inside, there were famous comic artist making their respective lawak series. The area seemed more interesting and lively compare to the ones in 5th floor. There were sculptures, paintings and even a kitchen. In the middle of the studio were employees concentrating on inking and their inking is incredibly accurate. We took alot of pictures in this studio and also a picture with Miss Nishiki a graphic novel artist of Pop Gang.

We went back down to the gallery studio after visiting the artist area. To my surprise, there was actually a secret door at the back of the gallery leading to a convention that was held in a year or 2 ago. It was very beautiful and nice inside with many forms of art.

Original work of graphic novels

After that session we had a little shopping with a special discount and many of us brought alot of items and got free gifts too. We went back to the gallery after words to have a little Q&A  contest it was fun and got some prizes. I won one of the quiz's and got a Lawak themed folder but Mr, Radhi(our lecturer) answered the hardest question and got te grand prize. It was an original Painting on a canvas which looks great. Our visit ended at around 12 noon, and we got even more gifts as prizes. It was a very awesome experience visiting Gempak stars. We had lunch after that then our next stop was the Ajinomoto production factory.

Character History

Character History

Laksamana Hang Rimau

Hang Rimau was born an orphan in a small village near the capital. Hang Rimau never knew what happened to his parents and he lived with old folks who adopted him. During his young age, he is brave yet reckless, he would accept any challenges that was thrown at him even if it was life threatening usually resulting him getting hurt. During bedtimes, the old folks would tell him a story about the laksamanas, how they are brave, loyal and fearless and the stories then inspire him to become a laksamana. In his teenage years, he decided to go to the capital to become a laksamana. He trained hard as a kadet learning the ropes and made a lot of friends. Until they were send to the frontlines to defend their country. The war was brutal and Hang Rimau lost a lot of friends and that time when Hang Rimau was faced with overwhelming forces from the enemy, Hang Rimau stood strong and repelled the enemy. It was that day people started recognizing Hang Rimau as a hero and he quickly rose in rank. The sultan saw the potential inside Hang Rimau and offered him a job as a personal guard. Soon, Hang Rimau and the sultan became good friends. After years of service he became one of the most loyal laksanamas in history.

Laksamana Jahat

Jahat used to be a respectable man, the loss of his family was unbearable to him and thus driven him to insanity. In his young age, he enjoyed fighting as a sport and had always picked fights no matter how strong they are. He joined the military to show the Repchinese his strength. Soon, he developed a enjoyment in killing his enemies .His fighting skill is so fearsome that he quickly rose to the rank of Kapten. Even his tactics is feared, using his tactics he is able to trick and lure enemies into traps and is known as one of the most cunning minded kaptens. He was then promoted to laksamana with his own armada. At the same time, he started a family and had 3 children. The incident of the loss of his family began when his fleet was caught unprepared by a surprise attack from the Repchinese. It broke through the defence of the fleet. Many houses were burned and many people were slaughtered including Jahat’s family in that incident. From then on the Jahat’s hate for the Repchinese grew to an uncontrollable rage and had shown no mercy since then.

The Sultan

The Sultan is a wise and kind ruler of the Malayfurs. He was respected by his people and his wise leadership placed him as sultan for many years. The sultan would help anyone in need and provide support to provinces in distress. War was the last thing the sultan would have wanted and tried many attempts to make peace but the histories of hatred between the previous sultan and the Repchinese was immeasurable. When the Repchinese sent an ambassador with a sign of peace, the sultan was happy of the news and did not hesitate to take the offer, even if it was just a temporary cease fire. He welcomed the ambassador with every visit, hoping to prolong the peace and repairing the relationship between the two nations. Soon, the ambassador started to open up to the sultan and became good friends.

The ambassador

The ambassador was a Repchinese general from the far east and never had any hatred towards the Furmalays, He only fought to defend his nation. When a new ruler rose to the Repchinese throne, the ruler though the war as a waste of lives and decided to end the conflict. Many discussions were made by the political group and decided to start off with a cease fire. The General was chosen to be the ambassador since he does not have any I’ll blood with the Furmalays. The ambassador took the task and arrived at the Furmalay capital. The sultan greeted him with full of kindness. The ambassador felt an awkward feeling but being cautious of the sultans actions at the same time. With each visit, the ambassador knows more and more about the sultan and started to think that the sultan never had any ill intentions. In the end, the ambassador puts his trust on the sultan to lead the nations to peace.

Storyline

The story starts when the Repchinese sent an ambassador to meet the Sultan of the Furmalays to discuss politics and peace. A Chinese messenger was first sent to inform of the ambassador’s arrival. Laksamana Jahat was one of the first to receive the message as he was in the charge of one of the frontline territory. He decided it is a perfect oppotunity to break the cease fire treaty

The next morning, back at the Furmalay’s capital city, some Laksamanas was called back to the capital, Jahat being one of them. They were being called back to tighten the security of the capital and the Sultan. At Around noon, the Repchinese ambassador along with a number of Repchinese guards arrived at the capital. The citizens of the capital were uneasy of their arrival, even when the guards of the capital kept close watch on them. As the Repchinese marched towards the sultan’s castle, Jahat was assessing the strength of the guards. The guards are of elite rank and with this amount of guards he is surely going to need someone to help him with his scheme.

Hang Rimau, who was one of the top laksamanas of the Furmalays was just patrolling outside the city. Hang Rimau is brave and loyal, but his weakness is that he puts a lot of trust in his friends. Jahat saw this chance to manipulate him into thinking that it was an assassination attempt on the Sultan at midnight. After being told of the attempt, Hang Rimau was curious on how did he know of such attempt and asked series of questions but Jahat, using his cunning mind answered them with convincing answers which has almost no arguable points. In the end, Hang Rimau agreed to work together to disrupt the plan Jahat then told him to wait for him by the castle entrance until he has come up with a plan.

It was almost night time, Hang Rimau waited patiently for Jahat’s return almost to the point of thinking that his friend had been caught until Jahat suddenly appeared behind him. Hang Rimau startled, but at the same time relieved to see him. Jahat apologized for scaring him and told him that the ambassador’s room was at the top guess room of the castle. He also told him that the security was very tight, but he is familiar with the castle’s layout and know of a secret passage to the ambassadors room. The plan was simple, Jahat will distract the guards while Hang Rimau takes the secret passage to the ambassadors room and kill him. Hang Rimau heard this and did not like the plan to kill but wanted to capture so the ambassador will admit his crimes. Jahat grunted for a moment, and agreed to capture instead. As Hang Rimau went ahead on the plan, Jahat gave an evil grind behind Hang Rimau and went to distract the guards.

Hang Rimau proceeded stealthily as Jahat lured more and more guards away from Hang Rimau’s position. He finally reached the secret passage and entered it, the passage was quite narrow and dark which is hard to see where he is heading. Unknowingly, Hang Rimau tripped and fell breaking the entrance at the other end of the passage, into the ambassador’s room. Immediately, the ambassador grabbed his spear and gave a downward blow. With quick reflexes, Hang Rimau dodged the blow with a side roll. Hang Rimau got up at quickly drew his Kris and the two was locked in a dreadful combat. The battle took quite a while and Hang Rimau was victorious as he managed to knock the ambassador unconscious. Hang Rimau was absolutely tired from that battle when suddently the door flung open. There standing was a dark figure, it was Jahat with his Kris drawn and soaked with blood, his face with an evil expression. Jahat lunged at the unconscious ambassador, Hang Rimau knowing that he lied about his agreement stopped the blow in time. Hang Rimau tried to reason with Jahat but got no answer, instead Jahat attacked Hang Rimau instead. Hang Rimau was already weary fighting the ambassador, he was barely able to evade and block Jahats attacks. Hang Rimau fell as the last of his strength was used up, Jahat was about to land the final blow when luckily the Sultan and his guards arrived and stopped Jahat in time.

Hang Rimau told the Sultan of the assassination attempt but the sultan told Hang Rimau there was never such an attempt and said that they became good friends from previous political discussions. Hang Rimau was ashamed of his actions as he was tricked by Jahat. Jahat was bursting in rage as he is unable to kill the ambassador, he was chained and taken to prison as he has clearly lost his mind. Hang Rimau put down his Kris and kneel infront of the Sultan begging for forgiveness. Hang Rimau is sure that he will be stripped of his rank and sent to prison or executed. But, the sultan did not do so, he simply forgive Hang Rimau without consequences. Hang Rimau asked why and the sultan replied that Hang Rimau like a son to him and has never been disappointed in him. Hang Rimau shed a tear and promise that such mistake would never happen again.

In the end, Hang Rimau apologized to the ambassador as they return to the repchinese capital. Jahat was stripped of his rank and was sentenced to prison for the rest of his life. The Furmalays and Repchinese established peace a few months later and both sides prospered the everlasting peace.
