Visit to Gempak stars and Ajinomoto factory

On 1st of April we had a trip to Gempak stars and Ajinomoto production factory. We went there by bus at around 9 AM. Our first destination was the Gempak stars headquarters ,the journey was quite long it took almost an hour to get there. We reached the headquarters at around 10 AM, the road was quite small and there was no way the bus can park so we had to drop off a small distances from the headquarters. After a while we were greeted with an employee of gempak stars and lead us to the headquarters.

GEMPAK STARS
3 Employees at the entrance

The headquaters itself doesn't look very big, at the entrance the space was quite small but it had 5 floors which took some effort to climb. We were greeted by 2 other members and were lead to the 3rd floor which is the gallery and it is used for their presentation. The gallery is not big but it is enough for all of us it is also quite cool so it wasn't stuffy for us either. They talked alot about how the company came to be and also the process of each work.

If I remember correctly the artist made sketches of their comic or story line which requires details of how it goes, made numbers on dialogue balloons to show the sequence and viewed by others for feedback. After that phase, they are drawn in light blue on a sketching paper and are sent to the other department/studio for inking. The process of inking is traced accurately and carefully. After inking, it is then scanned into digital form and colored using software's. Once, the coloring is done it is then sent to the printing factory by mail to be mass produced.

After the presentations the employees gave us a tour to the studios on the 4th and 5th floor which is where the magazines and graphic novels are drawn and made. We visited the 5th floor where the gempak magazines are made. To my amazement, the room was pretty big compare to the floors bellow. The room is able to hold many employees and all of them are seemed very focused and are undisturbed by us visiting them. The employees are making various information about games, movies, figurines and such using software's that some I do not recognize. They are also responsible on the story boarding.

We went to down 4th floor after the visit which is the artist and inking studio. Inside, there were famous comic artist making their respective lawak series. The area seemed more interesting and lively compare to the ones in 5th floor. There were sculptures, paintings and even a kitchen. In the middle of the studio were employees concentrating on inking and their inking is incredibly accurate. We took alot of pictures in this studio and also a picture with Miss Nishiki a graphic novel artist of Pop Gang.

We went back down to the gallery studio after visiting the artist area. To my surprise, there was actually a secret door at the back of the gallery leading to a convention that was held in a year or 2 ago. It was very beautiful and nice inside with many forms of art.

After that session we had a little shopping with a special discount and many of us brought alot of items and got free gifts too. We went back to the gallery after words to have a little Q&A  contest it was fun and got some prizes. I won one of the quiz's and got a Lawak themed folder but Mr, Radhi(our lecturer) answered the hardest question and got te grand prize. It was an original Painting on a canvas which looks great. Our visit ended at around 12 noon, and we got even more gifts as prizes. It was a very awesome experience visiting Gempak stars. We had lunch after that then our next stop was the Ajinomoto production factory.
