Introduction
Websites is a collection of web pages where each of them
are designed to reach a targeted audience. Designers do not only create
websites creatively for visuals, they are created with a purpose to attract
certain audience to actually browse the site. So, designers use the principles
of multimedia as a guideline to create their site, and they are white space, balance, visual weight
and perspective, colours, movement, 2/3:1/3 rule, simplicity and consistency.
Also, Analyzing the website is required
to determine the quality of the website.
Task
This task requires us to pick any 4 websites
and analyze them according to the multimedia principles. We are to analyze the
sites layout and show our understanding on how to analyze a website.
No.1
Screenshot 1,2 & 3
This is a
website called Golden Screen Cinemas(GSC), which is an official site featuring
movies that are being shown. The web also shows a lot of news about upcoming
movies, announcements and such. Screenshot 1 shows the top page of the website,
the site has a lot of interactivity as well as moving images showing all the
movies and has arrow buttons on the advertisements. Also, the site has drop
down menus as well as the main menu on top as shown on Screenshot 2, The menu
on top and side images also follows as you scroll down the website. In, my
opinion the site gives me a decent feel in staying on the site but I feel like
there is somewhat too much visuals and complications on the site. But, it is
clear its purpose is to display information about current and upcoming movies
as well as other less important news. I can also see that the site also targets
on people who wants to know about current movies as well those who want to buy
the tickets online.
Screenshot 4 & 5
Screenshot 4
and 5 shows the bottom of the page. At this part, things get less interesting
and I can feel the need to ignore these parts. Screenshot 4 shows the part
where it is also abit crowded and unbalanced. Because, the text are everywhere
with only a thin border separating them. There’s also the part of text
consistency, as you can see there varies text sizes and It causes confusion and
does not give us the impression to read the news at all. The end part of the
page is fine with several links it is also has similar options with the top
main menu.
Screenshot 6 & 7
This is a
page that I was redirected when clicking on the ticketing & show times link. The site is more simple
than the main one, it also has a drop down menu interaction. The main menu follows
you even in the redirected page. The white space here is more evenly on the top
part used but there is a huge space left when scrolling down which throws off
the balance as well as a blank side images which makes the site too simple and
empty.
Overall and suggestions
To me, this
would just be an average site, the colors are ok using only red black and
yellow. The site a should tone down the visuals on the main page and balanced
off the text on the news to make it more interesting and worth the time
viewing. The other linked site should not be too empty especially the side
images. Filling up or balancing the white space at the bottom should make them
look more unity.
No.2
Screenshot 1 & 2
This site is
an online game store that sells games which are DRM-Free. On the main page, the
site is actually simple and neat with simple information and pricing of the
game. Also, it features games from both old and new. This shows that the site
targets gamers who like old classics games as well as gamers who want the newer
games. The interaction is simple, whatever games you wanted to buy it will add
into a cart just like a shopping mall making it easier to manage how much are
you buying and paying. In terms of principles, the site makes good use of white
space and balance as you can see in the screenshots. The site doesn’t strain my
eyes when browsing, it is simple and easy to understand with a minimal of color
which is only purple and black text.
Screenshot 4, 5 & 6
Screenshot 4,
5 and 6 shows the bottom part of the main page, as you can see the site
maintains consistency and balance, the left side showing news and right side
showing games on sell. Every text is consistent with a balance in visual
images. The main control panel on top of the browser follows as you scroll down
as well. Overall, to me this is not a bad site, it is simple and easily
understandable. Showing whatever you want to know first and lets you click on
them if you require more information. Images will definitely interests buyers
to buy the games since it shows the content than just text.
Screenshot 7 & 8
Screenshot 7
and 8 shows the site I was redirected to when clicking on the games tab on the
main menu. Just like the main page, the site is simple with quick information
and efficient use of white space and balance. The white space here gives enough
room for each game title to show its self without crowding the page too much.
The site also gives a proper search engine for people to find specific games or
category of games depending on the tabs click, like the cheapest games,
specific genres, different languages available and such.
Overall and suggestions
The site is
quite good in my opinion, it is simple and balanced. I don’t really have much
to complain about the site but if I am to suggest something. Maybe, some sound
effects or slightly more movement would be good for the site.
No. 3
Screenshot 1 & 2
This site is
an online computer store by Asus, They sell various devices from phones,
tablets and computers including their components. Their target audience would
be people interested in getting new phones or computers or searching for parts
of computer components The site has visual looks but some parts of it also lack
visual, like in screenshot 2 where I clicked on the tabs and it gives me a drop
down of products with plan uninteresting white background. The simplicity of
the site is fair and the text is consistent as well as the colors. Though there
are barely any transitions happening which is making the site dull.
Screenshot 3 & 4
Scrolling
down, the site looks to have balance but as it shows this part has less
interesting things to keep people from browsing further down. It has complexity
on top but less at the bottom. The white space used is lesser on images but
more with text which is not a problem because text do need more space in order
to make it easier to read.
Overall & suggestions
This is quite
a plain site in my opinion. It feels quite empty when looking at the bottom of
the site as well as the product tabs. The site should improve in more visuals
or transitions and even out top and bottom visuals to attract interest.
